Treating children with Toyohari

In Europe, acupuncture is increasingly used for treatment of health problems in children. Toyohari practitioners are well trained to help treat your child.

Since children have fear of needles, especially when younger, it is necessary to change the way that the needling is done by making it milder, more comfortable and less scary for children. Here, Toyohari is very well suited for treatment of children with little change needed since much of the needling involves using non-inserted needling methods. Further, Toyohari practitioners are trained in the use of the round-ended needle the ‘teishin’, which can be a very useful tool when treating children. The round end is lightly touched to the points with no discomfort or distress.

While the tendency in traditional medicine in China and Korea is to use herbal medicine or massage for treatment of children, which appears to be how they deal with the general fear of needles that children show, in Japan for almost 300 years, a highly specialised treatment method has been used, the system of ‘Shonishin’ (Children’s Needle Therapy). This method uses rounded treatment tools that are stroked or tapped gently on the surface of the body in set patterns.

This specialised treatment method is commonly used by acupuncturists in Japan to treat children. Many Toyohari practitioners have also learned Shonishin and can routinely combine Toyohari with Shonishin for treatment of children for a wide range of health problems.
